Does Credit Repair Work?

The Mortgage Buddy would like to welcome Brett Robbins to this months guest blogger spot. Brett Robbins was born and raised in Worcester Massachusetts and has committed himself to helping homeowners and prospective owners know the truth about credit reporting. In previous rolls he has assisted  homeowners fight through the red tape of home loan modifications and avoid foreclosures. His knowledge and experience makes him an industry leader and a voice we should all trust in the convoluted algorithm of credit reporting.

Did you know one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their three credit reports?

“These are eye-opening numbers for American consumers,” said Howard Shelanski, Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Bureau of Economics.

However, according to the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch newspaper (Dispatch), there may be nothing you can do to erase these mistakes because of the rules are insufficient on how the credit reporting agencies must correct them. According to an FTC study earlier this year, these errors could lead to you paying more for products such as auto loans and insurance.

“Your credit report has information about your finances and your bill-paying history, so it’s important to make sure it’s accurate,” said Charles Harwood, Acting Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.  “The good news for consumers is that credit reports are free through annualcreditreport.com, and if you find an error, you can work with the credit reporting company to fix it.”

However, according to Dispatch, the federal law that governs credit reporting is fraught with loopholes and obstacles that make correcting mistakes difficult, if not impossible. This is even the case for the most obvious mistakes: That’s not my birth date. That’s not my name. I’m not dead.

Should you hire a credit repair company?

Credit Repair You may not know this, but credit repair is ineffective because it results in only temporary deletions. Anyone can dispute inaccuracies on their credit report and then have it reappear months later. So, it shouldn’t be something that you pay for. The credit bureaus only temporarily remove negative items on your credit profile if the credit reporting agency determines your dispute is frivolous or if they contact the creditor and verify the account is yours.

How can you fix errors on your credit report?

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was originally passed in 1970 and is essentially a consumer’s bill of rights, but critics say its far friendlier to the industry than to consumers. Its important to take advantage of your free annual credit report because you can review your credit report to ensure there are no errors. According to the FCRA, you have the right to dispute incomplete or inaccurate information. Consumer reporting agencies must correct or delete inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable information. Inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable information must be removed or corrected, usually within 30 days. However, a consumer reporting agency may continue to report information it has verified as accurate. According to Dispatch, when you dispute an error, they don’t investigate, they compare, so if the information is inaccurate in the creditors’ database, it will remain inaccurate in credit reports, and consumers will receive a letter saying that the inaccuracy has been verified as accurate.

Can you remove negative items on your credit report?

There is one company that has developed a legal dispute over 14 years and has a track record of success. No one else is doing this type of credit dispute and legal challenge. They dispute credit reporting law, while other companies may force you to lie about the status of your account (not my account, frivolous disputes, etc.).
